What you'll learn:
A data lake is still the right foundation. It holds the deep historical records companies need for compliance and for training models. But AI performs best on fresh data, and a lake alone can't get information into people's hands fast enough. Without a way to move data out of storage and into daily use, that lake turns into a bottleneck instead of an asset.
The lake answers the “what.” The stream answers the “when.” A lake stores the history. A stream carries a signal, like a sudden spike in buyer research, out of storage and into a rep's or marketer's hands while the opportunity is still live.
First, the data lake itself, which stays the single source of truth for historical and compliance-grade records. Second, streaming connectivity, which moves fresh signals out of the lake in real time. Third, stakeholder-specific activation, meaning the tools, like AI sales assistants or marketing orchestration platforms, that actually put those signals to work.
Start by mapping how data moves today. Is it stuck in silos? Does it take approvals or a long chain of process to access? Every delay is a clue. Build the first stream around a specific use case, like real-time targeting for marketing or faster routing for customer service, rather than trying to re-architect everything at once. The goal is to unlock what's already in the lake, not replace it.
Marketing can move from static, week-old lists to journeys that adjust as buyer behavior changes. That only works if marketing has a seat at the table on data strategy, especially to make sure an account or buying group's identity stays consistent as it moves between systems. Otherwise, the customer experience fragments.
For sales, it powers “next-best-action” prompts, so historical lake data and live intent signals point reps toward the right move in the moment. For the C-suite, it builds a command-center view where the same KPIs work as both a look back at performance and a forward read on pipeline health and revenue.
A data lake gets you in the game. The real edge comes from connecting that foundation to the tools your teams use every day. Turning a static reservoir into a live, moving system is what lets a company act with the speed AI demands and the precision good data makes possible.
